Airport Schiphol is one of the largest and busiest airports in Europe, serving as a hub for European, Asian and Trans-Atlantic flights. In 2013 more than 52 million passengers passed through this airport which has more than 300 destinations all over the world.

The airport opened in the autumn of 1916 as a military airbase but from the end of WWI on, Schiphol has lost its military importance and became a completely civilian airport. The airport is named after the former military base situated in this area. This fortification was called Fort Schiphol. The whole airport is below sea level which means that Schiphol is geographically the lowest situated airport all over the world. When built (1991), its air traffic control tower was the tallest of its kind in the world 101 m.

The airport is expanding even these days because the building of a new pier, a garage and a terminal announced in 2012. According to the plans constructions will commence in 2016 and end in 2018.
Schiphol has been constructed using a single-terminal concept, which has three large departure halls under the same roof; it means that the departure halls and even piers are connected, except Pier M – when passengers have passed security control here, they cannot walk between different areas. There are extended shopping facilities throughout the airport, both before and after customs.

Passengers can find several possibilities to spend their waiting time at Amsterdam airport. The Rijksmuseum is next to the airport, exhibiting various pieces of modern and pre-modern art. There is a recently opened library that offers books in almost 30 languages dominantly with travelling informations. The library includes an electronic library (internet) with free downloading facilities. From the landside an extended Panoramaterras is accessible for the public (connecting passengers may only use this viewing area after exiting the airport). The latest hotel near the airport is the Hilton with its peculiar and spectacular architecture.

Departure Hall 1 (piers B – 14 gates, C – 21 gates) serves Schengen areas exclusively.
Departure Hall 2 (piers D and E) is mainly used for non-Schengen areas but the upper floor of Pier D (which is the largest one in the airport) is dedicated for Schengen areas. In Pier D non-Schengen gates have their numbers from D1 to D57 while Schengen gates are numbered from D59. Pier E has 14 gates to non-Schengen areas including China and the Middle-East.
